Vanderbilt Physicians Visit Lincoln Medical Center

According to the National Center for Health Statistics 2002 – 2005 data, Lincoln County has a premature birth rate of 14.9%. Premature births are classified as less than 37 completed weeks of gestation.

Recently, the Lincoln Medical Center Obstetrics department was pleased to participate in a Community Outreach Education Program for physicians and nurses at LMC. The program was sponsored by the Division of Neonatology and the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Cheryl Major, RNC, BSN, who is Vanderbilt’s Outreach Education Coordinator and Stefanie Brown, MSN, RN, who is the Director of the OB department at LMC, set up dates and times for the classes to be held at Lincoln Medical Center.

Dr. Mario Rojas, MD, MPH, a NICU Neonatologist and Dr. Sandra Hoesli, MD, both from Vanderbilt Medical Center, came to Lincoln Medical Center and presented lectures on the challenges of newborn medicine that primary care physicians face in daily practice. The interactive discussions included topics on the Management of Respiratory Distress in the Term & Preterm Infant, Neonatal Viral Infections, Management of NICU Babies after Discharge, and a Neonatal Resuscitation Program update.

Those in attendance included Dr. Theresa Morrison, Dr. Kyle Spears, and Dr. Paul Sain along with several nurses who work at Lincoln Medical Center.

Dr. Rojas was impressed that the OB department already had a NeoPuff Infant Resuscitator in use since 1989. This device is used to safely inflate the baby's lungs and provide optimum oxygenation while stabilizing a pre-term or term infant that is in respiratory distress.

Lincoln Medical Center is committed to consistently meet and exceed standards of care for our mothers and their babies and families. The locally available experienced team of doctors and nurses offer mothers and babies optimal care during the childbirth experience.
