Patient Responsibilities

Provision of Information

A patient has the responsibility to provide, to the best of his/her knowledge, accurate and complete information about present complaints, past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications, and other matters related to his/her health. The patient has the responsibility to report his/her condition to the responsible practitioner. A patient is responsible for making known whether he/she clearly comprehends his/her medical plan of care and what is expected.

Compliance Instructions

A patient is responsible for following the treatment plan recommended by the practitioner primarily responsible for the patient's care. This may include following the instructions of nurses and allied health personnel as they carry out the coordinated plan of care, implement the responsible practitioner's orders, and enforce the applicable hospital rules and regulations. The patient is responsible for keeping appointments and, when unable to do so for any reason, for notifying the responsible practitioner or the hospital.

Refusal of Treatment

The patient is responsible for his/her actions if he/she refuses treatment or does not follow the practitioner's instructions.

Hospital Charges

The patient is responsible for assuring that the financial obligations of his/her health care are fulfilled as promptly as possible.

Hospital Rules and Regulations

The patient is responsible for following hospital rules and regulations affecting patient care and conduct.

Respect and Consideration

The patient is responsible for being considerate of the rights of other patients and hospital personnel and for assisting in the control of noise, smoking, and the number of visitors. The patient is responsible for being respectful of the property of other persons and of the hospital.

How to File a Compliment or Complaint

Lincoln Medical Center makes every effort to make your stay comfortable and pleasant. Issues may arise, requiring our close attention. Please follow these guidelines if you experience anything that causes you concern.

Step 1. Contact the Person Involved

If you have a concern or suggestion, first consider contacting the person whom you feel is involved. Explain your concern and how you would like to resolve the issue. Be specific and make your position clear, and try to understand the other person's point of view. By working together, we can reach an agreement

If you are especially pleased with a staff member's attention and concern for your needs, feel free to compliment them directly. Health care workers get their greatest job satisfaction from your kind words.

Step 2. Contact the Department Manager or Supervisor

If you are not satisfied, or if you prefer not to speak with the person involved, ask to speak to the shift supervisor, department manager, or Chief Nursing Officer. Any of these people will work with you to investigate your concerns. Most concerns can be resolved in this way.

You may also ask to speak to the shift supervisor, department manager, or Chief Nursing Officer when you wish them to know how much you are pleased with a staff member's performance.

Step 3. Contact the Patient Representative

If you are still dissatisfied, call the Patient Representative's office at extension 1299.

A patient representative will discuss your concerns with you and take appropriate action to resolve the problem. Most issues can be resolved with a clear understanding on both sides of what can and cannot be done in a given situation. During Step 3, the hospital administrator will be informed of all complaints, and the administrator will be involved in the problem-solving process to the extent he/she feels necessary.

You do have the right to file a complaint with the state if you wish. The Patient Representative will provide you with all necessary information in order for you to do so.

During your hospital stay, if you wish to pass along a compliment of any kind, the Patient Representative would enjoy hearing about this also.

During your discharge process you will receive a patient questionnaire evaluating your care while in the hospital. Please take the time to complete this and leave it with your nurse, with a volunteer, or in the business office. This gives us a mechanism to identify any trends in the delivery of patient care, and opportunities for improvements or implementation of new services.
